Dr. Robert Imam Sutedja: Architect of
Indonesia’s Healthcare MICE Ecosystem
By: Dr. Nico A. Lumenta, March 2026
Secretary General of Indonesian Hospital Association (PERSI), 1990–1996
Introduction
The development of the healthcare Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry in Indonesia—and increasingly across Southeast Asia—cannot be discussed without acknowledging the pivotal role of Dr. Robert Imam Sutedja. Over nearly five decades, he has shaped an ecosystem that connects hospitals, medical technology industries, policymakers, and international partners.
What began as a modest initiative driven by professional curiosity and humanitarian commitment eventually evolved into Hospital Expo, now widely recognized as the largest healthcare exhibition in Southeast Asia. The transformation of this idea—from a small-scale exhibition organized with limited resources into a regional industry platform—illustrates how vision, perseverance, and trust can create lasting institutional impact.
This article reflects on the strategic leadership and enduring legacy of Dr. Robert Imam Sutedja, whose work has significantly contributed to the advancement of Indonesia’s healthcare infrastructure and international collaboration.
The Early Vision: From Typewriter to Regional Platform
The origins of Hospital Expo date back to 1978, a time when Indonesia’s healthcare exhibition landscape was virtually nonexistent. In the early years, Dr. Robert relied on simple tools—a typewriter and the Yellow Pages—to identify potential exhibitors and partners within the medical equipment industry.
During the First Lustrum of IRSJAM, he introduced an innovative concept that hospitals should be viewed as “Hotel Plus” institutions—complex service organizations requiring integrated infrastructure, technology, and management systems beyond conventional medical equipment.
The first exhibition, held at Jakarta Fair in Monas, was modest in scale. Booths were constructed using wooden frames, and most operational tasks were managed personally by Dr. Robert himself. Yet despite its humble beginnings, the event succeeded in attracting both hospital leaders and national medical equipment companies. Over time, the exhibition steadily expanded in scale and influence.
A key strategic decision occurred in 1995, when Dr. Robert transformed Hospital Expo from a triennial event into an annual exhibition, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Indonesian independence. The move was accompanied by the establishment of an annual PERSI National Hospital Seminar, which further strengthened the exhibition’s relevance to hospital leaders nationwide.
This strategic shift ultimately positioned Hospital Expo at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) and helped establish it as a central platform for medical technology exchange and healthcare management discourse in Indonesia.
Institutionalizing the Vision: The Establishment of PT OSI
The creation of PT Okta Sejahtera Insani (OSI) in 1994 marked a turning point in the professionalization of Hospital Expo.
Moving from a temporary organizing committee to a formal corporate structure allowed the exhibition to meet international standards of professionalism, contractual accountability, and regulatory compliance. It also enabled stronger collaboration with global exhibition partners and international exhibitors.
The name “Okta Sejahtera Insani” reflects the spirit of collective leadership behind the initiative. Eight founding figures—including prominent healthcare leaders and hospital management experts—joined forces to establish the company and strengthen the institutional foundation of the exhibition.
Under Dr. Robert’s leadership as its first CEO, PT OSI expanded the exhibition’s international reach. Exhibitors from China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam began participating, eventually shaping a composition of roughly 30 percent international exhibitors and 70 percent domestic participants.
Through this platform, Hospital Expo evolved into more than a trade exhibition; it became a knowledge exchange forum for hospital leaders and healthcare professionals across Indonesia.
Leadership Philosophy: Compassionate and Grounded
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Robert is widely respected for his human-centered leadership style.
Within PT OSI, he is often described as a fatherly leader—approachable, patient, and deeply committed to the welfare of his staff. His leadership reflects what modern management literature describes as Compassionate Leadership.
Despite holding a prominent leadership position, Dr. Robert is known for his humility and willingness to work alongside his team. Colleagues recall instances where he personally assisted staff in preparing exhibition booths to ensure exhibitors received the best possible service.
His commitment to employee welfare was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the exhibition industry faced severe disruption. Despite the absence of revenue for nearly two years, he chose not to lay off employees and continued paying salaries.
For Dr. Robert, the exhibition industry is fundamentally a business built on trust. Trust, he believes, cannot be purchased—it must be cultivated through integrity, consistency, and cultural competence.
Recognition and International Networks
Dr. Robert’s contributions have received national recognition, including a Museum Rekor Dunia Indonesia (MURI) record for initiating the first medical equipment and hospital needs exhibition in Indonesia.
Hospital Expo has also been acknowledged by ASPERAPI (Indonesian Exhibition Companies Association) as one of the events that created a lasting legacy for Indonesia’s MICE industry. In February 2025, he received the ASPERAPI Lifetime Achievement Award.
Internationally, Dr. Robert has built strong partnerships with global exhibition organizations and healthcare technology networks, including KIMES in South Korea, international exhibition companies, and multiple industry associations in East Asia.
His distinctive advantage lies in his background as a healthcare practitioner. This experience allows him to design exhibitions that directly address the operational realities and technological needs of hospitals.
Strategic Strengths: Building a Sustainable Ecosystem
The success of Hospital Expo reflects several strategic principles embodied by Dr. Robert’s leadership.
First, the ecosystem is built upon trust capital—a long-term asset developed through credibility and consistent professional relationships.
Second, Hospital Expo benefits from a strong network effect, bringing together thousands of hospital leaders, medical technology companies, and policymakers in a single annual platform.
Third, Dr. Robert has emphasized leadership regeneration. Recognizing that institutional sustainability depends on the next generation, he has gradually delegated responsibilities and prepared new leaders to continue developing the organization.
Finally, his leadership demonstrates exceptional resilience. Over the decades, Hospital Expo has survived economic crises, technological disruption, and the global pandemic—emerging stronger each time.
Legacy and Future Directions
Today, Hospital Expo stands as one of the most influential healthcare industry gatherings in Southeast Asia.
In addition to Jakarta, the exhibition has expanded to other Indonesian cities including Surabaya, Medan, and Bali, reflecting its growing national reach. The ecosystem has also supported related initiatives such as KARS Expo and national healthcare forums organized by PERSI and other professional organizations.
Dr. Robert Imam Sutedja’s legacy lies not only in organizing exhibitions, but in building a resilient healthcare knowledge ecosystem that connects industry innovation with hospital leadership.
As the global exhibition industry evolves—facing digital transformation, hybrid event models, and sustainability expectations—the foundations he established remain highly relevant.
Ultimately, his story illustrates an enduring lesson in leadership: great institutions are built not merely through strategy and technology, but through trust, perseverance, and compassion.
Hospital Expo is therefore more than an annual event. It is a living monument to the progress of Indonesia’s healthcare sector and the collaborative spirit that drives it forward.
